New machines – 400 years later

On the occasion of marking the 400th anniversary of the publication of Faust Vrančić’s work New machines an exhibition entitled Machinae novae – 400 years later was opened on November 10, 2015 at the National and University Library in Zagreb.

The exhibition was organized by the National and University Library in Zagreb in an effort to remind the Croatian and the world public of great Vrančić’s achievements. The expert reviewer of the exhibition was Marijana Borić, PhD, a scientific associate at the Division for the History of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The foundations of the exhibition are the copies of covers of the most important works written by Vrančić, stored in the Collection of manuscripts and old books of the National and University Library in Zagreb (Dictionarium quinque nobilissimarum Europae linguarum, Latinae, Italicae, Germanicae, Dalmatiae et Ungaricae, Venice, 1595, and Machinae novae, Venice, 1615/1616). The works are digitized and their complete texts can be seen in the central part of the exhibition within the portal of Digital collection of the National and University Library in Zagreb.

The exhibition featured selected digital copies of the manuscript heritage of Vrančić’s family, also stored in the Collection of manuscripts and old books. To the period of life and work of Faust Vrančić are also related the copies of old and valuable materials from special funds of other collections in National and University Library in Zagreb (Graphic collection and Collection of maps and atlases).

The exhibition had a great resonance both in the media and in the general public, especially among younger population.
