Aonio Paleario and Antun Vrančić / Leo Košuta

“The theme of this conference “humanists-Protestants” can be understood in the wider meaning of this coinage as the theme of those humanists who, as lovers of the classical antiquity, supported also the restoration of the Church in its original state. As a product of a civil society formed in medieval communes, these humanists, through their criticism of scholastic and church institutions, contributed to the study of Christian history and opened the way for the reform, or restoration of the Church. Among the humanist reformers, however, one special group includes those who, following the reform, remained half way either for Catholic, or for Protestant repression: they remained isolated in their own countries or, as immigrants, wandered through Europe, finally disappearing, more or less, from the history by the end of the 16th century. Among those highly educated humanists who remained in the sphere of Catholicism and thought as reformers were Aonio Paleario (1503 – 1570) and, partly, Antun Vrančić (1504 – 1573).”
